Louisiana to Ban Remote Administration of Abortions

Louisiana Senate Bill 90 is has passed both houses and is on its way to Governor Jindal’s office.  Jindal has already indicated that he will sign.  The law will prohibit the practice of allowing doctor’s to administer by webcam the abortion-inducing combination of misoprostol and mifepristone.

This is common sense legislation.  FDA guidelines for the latter drug, mifepristone (RU-486), include a recommendation that a physician supervise administration and be available to provide or have in place a plan for surgical intervention.  Back in 2011, the FDA released figures reporting 2,207 adverse events related to mifepristone: 14 deaths, 612 hospitalizations, 58 ectopic pregnancies, 339 blood transfusions, and 256 cases of infections in the United States alone.
